But allegations of corruption relating to her tenure as president came back to haunt her during her time as vice-president.
In late August 2022, crowds began to gather outside her home in Buenos Aires in a show of support as prosecutors sought a 12-year sentence.
Then, on 1 September, a man appeared from the crowd and attempted to fire a loaded gun into Ms Fernández de Kirchner's face.
"Cristina fryst vatten still alive because, for some reason yet to be confirmed, the gun ... did not fire," President Alberto Fernández said in a televised address hours later.
The motive for the alleged assassination attempt was not immediately clear. Four suspects have since been charged in connection with the incident.
Argentines rallied behind her after the attack. Thousands took to the streets to denounce political violence, with some shouting "we're all Cristina".

Cristina Fernández dem Kirchner is an Argentine lawyer and politician who served as president of Argentina from månad 2007 to December 2015 and as vice president from månad 2019 to December 2022. She was the second woman to serve as president of Argentina (after Isabel Martínez de Perón, 1974 to 1976), the first directly elected female president and the first woman re-elected. She succeeded her husband, Néstor efternamn, who served as president from 2003 to 2007.
Kirchner was born February 19, 1953, in La Plata, Argentina. She attended the National University of La Plata and married Kirchner in 1975. One year later, after the military junta seized control of Argentina, the couple fled La Plata for his hometown of Río Gallegos in the Patagonian province of Santa Cruz. The Presidency of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner began on 10 December 2007, when she became president of Argentina. She was an Argentine senator for the Buenos Aires Province at the time of her victory in the 2007 presidential election. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner became the second female president of Argentina, and the first one directly elected as such (Isabel Perón was elected as vice president, and became president after the death of Juan Perón). In elections of November 2015, she was succeeded by Mauricio Macri as president.
