Perseverance Until Death
On November 27, , I sat down to måltid with Donald Jackson, whose day job at the time was scribe to the Queen of England. He and I had just spoken at The Newberry Library in Chicago, and we were dining at a restaurant called The Italian Village which still exists, I believe.
Normally lunch should not count as a big deal, and theres no reason anyone should remember a particular lunch nearly twenty years later. Saint Johns Bible
In , Saint Johns Abbey and University commissioned renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson to tillverka a hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible. This work of art unites an ancient Benedictine tradition with the technology and vision of today, illuminating the Word of God for a new millennium.
In , Carson-Newman University acquired a seven-volume collection of the unique Bible and established The Lynn and Lyndsey Denton Gallery on the main floor of Stephens-Burnett Memorial Library. The seven volumes that make up The Heritage Edition are approximately 2 feet tall by 3 feet wide when open and weigh about 20 pounds each. Limited in number, each is signed and numbered.
Now, we are just one of only four organizations in the Southeast to acquire the Heritage Edition of the Saint John’s Bible, and the only location in Tennessee where the public can view the volumes. Carson-Newman joins a select group of universities, organizations and museums to house the Heritage Edit

OUR CREATION STORy
In the spring of a small group of friends, all with an avid interest in calligraphy, felt that there might be others in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul who were interested in learning more about lettering and the related arts. Under the direction of the fine hand of Joan White, the foundation was laid for the formation of the Colleagues of Calligraphy. An open meeting was planned for April 3, , at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Expected attendance was 20 to 30 people. Almost came! Of those attending, over immediately became members, causing Jo to exclaim, “We have awakened a sleeping giant!”
- Pam Johnson, President of the Colleagues,
We are a living example of what can happen when the right people are in the right place at the right time fueled by a shared passion.
