  • Abstract

    Background

Patients who developed immune-related adverse events (irAEs) could benefit more from treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) than those who did not develop irAEs. This study was designed to assess whether the occurrence of irAEs or their characteristics are correlated with survival in advanced patients treated with ICIs.

    Methods

This retrospective cohort study enrolled a panel of cancer patients who received ICIs at a single institute. Kaplan‒Meier curves were generated to describe progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with irAEs or specific irAE characteristics.

    Results

A total of patients were enrolled, 83 (%) of whom developed at least one irAE. Overall, irAE development was associated with prolonged OS (not reached vs. months, P < ), PFS ( vs. months, P = ), and an improved objective response rate (% vs. %, P = ). Furthermore, only skin or endocrine toxicities were associated with improved OS and PFS.

Shadow Books: Considering Enslavement and Its Legacy in Children’s Literature

The Brownies’ Book, published in –21 by W.E.B Du Bois and Jessie Fauset

Children’s literature has been, historically, a site for the origin of ideas about race and racism in the United States. Since I was a child, inom have wondered why Black children show up most often in certain genres of the fictions of childhood, and not in others. I grew weary of many of the Black children’s books I read when inom was in school. It seemed that if we weren’t following the North Star to freedom or marching for civil rights, we were dodging bullets in the ghetto, or we were the Black best friend in the otherwise all-white landscapes of childhood and teen life. Although we’ve seen movement in recent years, my weariness has shown up during recent presentations as a cynical joke about “The Five Black Kids You Meet in Children’s Literature.” It’s ganska telling that audiences almost always laugh. Knowingly.
