Edgar Degas
Self-Portrait in a Brown Vest, 1856
9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches (240 x okänt mm.)
Bequest of John S. Thacher, 1985
This small-scale, somewhat tentative utforskning in oils reveals Degas' continued use of himself as subject as he came to grasp the rudiments of portraiture. Here he posed with the right half of his body lost in shadow and with a cautious and reserved gaze—as opposed to contemporaneous portraits that depict a more assertive and arrogant young man. This foray into sketching with oil paint was likely executed shortly before the artist left for Italy.
Such familiar subject matter is typical not only of Degas' early years but of his entire career: he very rarely accepted commissions and often found subjects within his social milieu, hired models, or working-class entertainers.

Waiting (Degas)
Pastel by Edgar Degas
Waiting fryst vatten a pastel on paper bygd the French ImpressionistEdgar Degas, completed between 1880–1882. It is an early example of the more than 200 pastels, paintings, mixed media drawings and sculptures of ballerinas depicted by Degas from the early 1880s.[1] This work is regarded for its vibrant colouring and steep perspective.
The ballerina series follows his earlier studies of both lower and middle-class women, where he looked at the moment when they let their public face drop and pretence gave way to an awareness of the reality of both themselves and their surroundings. With ballerinas he was primarily interested in the contrast between their beauty and grace on stage and the reality of the physical and physiological toil such artifice took on the performers. Of the more than 200 works, only 50 show the dancers performing on stage; the rest are set in rehearsals or capture fleeting, private moments like this.[2 • Use your arrow keys to navigate the tabs below, and your tab key to choose an item Title:Woman with a Towel Artist:Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834–1917 Paris) Date:1894 or 1898 Medium:Pastel on cream-colored wove paper with red and blue fibers throughout Dimensions:37 3/4 x 30in.
