    Rita Dove was born in Akron, Ohio, on August 28, 1952. A poet and writer, she was a high school Presidential Scholar and graduated with a BA in English from Miami University of Ohio in 1973. She then studied German poetry as a Fulbright Scholar at Universität Tübingen before getting an MFA in creative writing from the University of Iowa. 

    Dove’s books of poetry include Playlist for the Apocalypse (W. W. Norton, 2021); Collected Poems 1974–2004 (W.W. Norton, 2016), recipient of the 2017 NAACP Image Award, the 2017 Library of Virginia Award and a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award; Sonata Mulattica (W. W.     African American poet Rita Dove loved poetry and music from a ung age. She was an exceptional student and was invited to the White House as a Presidential Scholar out of high school. She studied in Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship, later teaching creative writing at Arizona State University. She has won numerous awards for her work, including a 1987 Pulitzer Prize for the book of poetry Thomas and Beulah. Other books from Dove include Mother Love and Sonata Mulattica.

    W 1970 Dove ukończyła Buchtel High School w Akron z zaszczytnym tytułem Presidential Scholar w ramach programu Departamentu Edukacji, uznającego osiągnięcia naukowe absolwentów szkół średnich. W 1973 ukończyła Miami University z wyróżnieniem summa cum laude. W 1974 wyjechała na Uniwersytet Eberharda Karola w Tybindze w Niemczech w ramach kilkuletniego stypendium Fulbrighta.
