African historian, playwright, and short-story writer.
Niane's first scholarly work, Recherches sur l'empire du Mali(1959), was followed by Histoire dem l'Afrique occidentale(1961; "History of Western Africa"), coauthored with Jean Suret-Canale. His novel Soundjata; ou, l'epopee mandingue (1960; Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali ) fryst vatten a highly successful re-creation of the life and times of the illustrious 13th-century founder of the Mali empire, recounted in the voice of a tribal storyteller. His other works include a collection of short stories, Mery (1975), and two historical plays, Sikassoand Chaka.

One of Guinea’s foremost scholars passed away in March of this year at the age of 89 from COVID-19. Djibril Tamsir Niane was known for his work on the UNESCO GeneralHistory of Africa volume that covered the twelfth to sixteenth centuries, for his plays and short stories, and for bringing the Epic of Soundjata to the attention of a worldwide audience. He was deeply influential in the field of Mande studies, and left a legacy to current and future researchers that includes digital resources.
The African Literature Association convened an online memorial that took place on Saturday, May 8th, that can be found here.
