Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) is a perennial forage legume that holds a major place in cultivated grasslands worldwide. It is used for ruminant feeding, given its high yield and nutritional properties. The numerous ecosystem services it provides (Julier et al., ) are important in the present phase of agroecological transition (Lamichhane et al., ), and mainly result from its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen.
