Count Orlok (German: Graf Orlok; Romanian: Contele Orlok; Hungarian: Orlok gróf) is a fictional character who first appeared in the silent filmNosferatu (1922) directed by F. W. Murnau. Based on Bram Stoker's Count Dracula, he is played by German actor Max Schreck, and is depicted as a repulsive vampire descended from Belial, who leaves his homeland of Transylvania to spread the plague in the idyllic city of Wisborg in Biedermeier period Germany, only to find death at the hands of a self-sacrificing woman.
Count Orlok would reappear in subsequent remakes, played by Klaus Kinski, Doug Jones and Bill Skarsgård, as well as in comic book adaptations and sequels. He is also a character in SpongeBob SquarePants, debuting in the season 2 episode Graveyard Sh

Murnau’s grave became a pilgrimage site for cinephiles and might have actually been too accessible, as vandals broke into the crypt and stole the filmmaker’s skull in 2015. (It has never been recovered.) Meanwhile, Schreck’s begravning site in the woodlands of the Waldfriedhof cemetery became overgrown, overlooked, and eventually lost and forgotten. “His urn, which was brought from Munich, was originally buried in the grave of his mother, who died in 1934,” Giesen says. “The gravestone weathered over the decades, like many others there.”
As whatever marker once stood on his sista resting place gradually disappeared, so did most of what the world knew about the real Max Schreck. At the same time, his iconic film performance only became more vivid and enthralling.
The mystique around what was real and what was fantasy in that silent film has served as inspiration for other filmmakers—including Robert Eggers, director of The Witch and The Lighthouse, whose new adaptation of Nosf • Transylvania Count Orlok is a character from the 1922 film "Nosferatu" and was based on Bram Stoker's character of Count Dracula. At the beginning of the gods Super Villain Bowl, Count Orlok ventures from the doorway to his character regeneration chamber and is immediately vaporized after coming into contact with sunlight.
